With the worries of glaciers and ice sheets melting, due to Global Warming, it would seem a no-brainer to kill two birds with one stone. Some method of turning ocean water into useable water must be devised by someone, possibly Bill Gates? It is important to satisfy the regulatory processes, but equally as important to engage the human component. Stakeholders need to be fully engaged early on in the process as ultimately, their support or lack thereof will determine whether an idea or project reaches fruition. There are scale and orders of magnitude issues. In today's world capital is rapidly accumulating in the hands of few and with capital comes power. With many markets, especially markets for capital itself, global in size there is limited ability to regulate that power. Not a good thing. Hardly seems sustainable over time.

I'm not sure that Willis, or Adam Smith for that matter, had the whole answer. I suspect they had pieces of it.

I see both encouraging and discouraging signs and do ponder how things sort out over time. Some days I"m a rose-coloured glasses optimist and sometimes way on the pessimist side.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06927560593465509866noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5028235400926441790.post-25108656558776360452014-11-12T20:25:30.406-08:002014-11-12T20:25:30.406-08:00"He argued that throughout history the domina..."He argued that throughout history the dominant institutions in society had assumed some level of responsibility for the whole, or the society ended up not lasting long or well. He noted that through time the dominant institutions had included; clan, tribe, church, nation-state and now we are clearly in a state where business is the most dominant institution in society."
Brilliant. Made my morning. I agree that unless business does start taking responsibility our current system won't last long. The 1% vs 99% attests to that. Adam Smith warned that the interests of Capital were far removed from the Interests of workers or of the Nation and that Capital would use its power to influence law makers. He did not offer a solution but he was never against all regulation of business, just against Mercantilism. He said nothing a bout laws governing business in relation to society or the environment for example. The Blog Fodderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11441978691701289074noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5028235400926441790.post-82455933953220946232014-10-13T16:53:27.289-07:002014-10-13T16:53:27.289-07:00Looking forward to reading about your adventures a...Looking forward to reading about your adventures and your thoughts, Wayne!
